City of Darwin is proud to announce the completion of key infrastructure upgrades at Alawa Oval, ensuring the site is fit for purpose and ready to support local sport for years to come.
Returned to Council by Charles Darwin University in 2023 after a 30-year lease, the oval required a complete overhaul of its irrigation system. As part of City of Darwin's 2025 Capital Works Program, a modern irrigation system has now been installed, including 100mm PVC mainlines and Hunter 121 rotary sprinklers to improve water efficiency and coverage across the grounds.
To further support sustainable water management, a 25,000-litre water tank and a new variable speed pump have been installed within the amenities block, delivering better control over irrigation operations.
In addition to the irrigation works, the deteriorated pine log fence surrounding the oval has been replaced with a new chainmesh fence. These enhancements mean Alawa Oval is now equipped to support sporting activities by both Darwin Cricket and NT AFL.
"City of Darwin is committed to maintaining and enhancing public spaces across both the city and our suburbs," said Simone Saunders, CEO of City of Darwin.
"The upgrades at Alawa Oval are part of our ongoing investment in local infrastructure to ensure our facilities remain safe, functional, and enjoyable for community use now and into the future."
City of Darwin remains committed to maintaining quality open spaces and recreational facilities that meet the needs of the community and support a vibrant, active city.
