The Marshall Government has provided a first look at progress on construction of the multi-million dollar Birth to Year 12 school at Aldinga, with construction well on track for the school's opening in 2022.
The build is already providing a major boost for local jobs, with 606 people employed on site to date and 526 local contractors engaged. 31 apprentices have worked on the project since construction began.
Economic benefits are flowing to a diverse range of businesses in Aldinga and the surrounding areas, with the large number of workers and contractors regularly engaging with local shops, hospitality providers and suppliers.
Concrete slabs have been laid and steel frames established for many of the buildings on site, providing an appreciation for the scope and size of the new school, which will accommodate 1675 local students when it reaches full capacity.
Premier Steven Marshall said the project was creating a jobs bonanza at a crucial time for the state's economy.
"This project is a key part of the Government's record-breaking $1.3 billion education build, which is providing a massive boost for local jobs across South Australia," said Premier Marshall.
"Overall, more than 100 school builds and upgrades will be delivered in the coming years, providing a solid pipeline of jobs and delivering a generational upgrade of schools across the state.
"The benefits for local families and students will be felt for years to come, with this world-class education facility opening in the heart of Aldinga in Term 1, 2022."
Staff recruitment for the new school has already begun, with Alison Colbeck taking the reins as its first principal last month.
Recruitment of several other leadership positions is now underway. Successful applicants are set to begin next year, to support the new principal in developing the school's curriculum and establishing connections with the local community.
Education Minister John Gardner said it was exciting time for the local community.
"This new school will be a welcome addition for many families in this rapidly growing area, and I know that many people in the local community are watching the progress of its construction with great excitement," said Minister Gardner.
"This school is meeting a critical need presented by the growing population of young families in Aldinga and surrounding areas, while delivering a modern, state-of-the-art birth to Year 12 school for families to access.
"The Aldinga school is one of four new schools set to open in 2022 and, along with the many upgrades occurring at existing schools across the state, these projects are delivering thousands of jobs for South Australians at a crucial time for our state's economy."
