The Territory Labor Government is working to alleviate the impact of flooding in Alice Springs, to better protect residents and support local businesses.
The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics has implemented the recommendation outlined in the Alice Springs Regional Flood Mitigation Advisory Committee report, which has investigated structural mitigation measures.
WRM Water and Environment were engaged to undertake flood modelling for Alice Springs to investigate and assess potential flood mitigation options to reduce the peak flow of a flood.
The results of the flood modelling established that there is no simple solution to mitigate flooding in Alice Springs, which is characterised by unique features that create limitations on what can be done.
The recommended flood mitigation option includes trunk drainage measures, which will:
increase Alice Springs' flood resilienceimprove flood protection of Alice Springs residential areas in localised flooding events up to a 1 in 100 year eventprovide flood immunity for public roads and the national highway.
Detailed design work for the recommended option is anticipated to begin in 2023 with construction set to start in 2024.
