A new bus bay has been built on Goonengerry Road, next to Goonengerry Public School thanks to funding from NSW Government's Safer Roads Program.

"This is great news for Goonengerry Public School, as it provides students with a safer and more accessible way to get on and off their school bus," said Byron Shire Council Mayor Sarah Ndiaye.

"Having a safe and reliable way to get to school is important for parents, caregivers and students, and makes it easier for the children to receive the education that they deserve," said Ms Ndiaye.

The bus bay was completed earlier this month, and included:

  • A concrete bus bay with kerb and guttering.
  • An accessible ramp with handrails for students of all abilities to safely move between the school and bus.
  • Lowering of existing telecommunication services.
  • New signage.

"Our priority is always the safety and wellbeing of our students," said Tony Hutchinson, Principal of Goonengerry Public School.

"This new bus bay not only enhances safety but also ensures all our students, including those with mobility challenges, can access their bus comfortably and confidently. We are grateful for the support from the NSW Government and Byron Shire Council in making this important project a reality," said Mr Hutchinson.

A new raised pedestrian crossing was also recently completed at Bangalow, thanks to the same funding program, making it safer for pedestrians to cross the road and access the sports fields and town.
