AMA ACT has issued a notice of an Extraordinary General Meeting to members scheduled for Wednesday, 3 December 2025, marking a pivotal moment in strengthening medical advocacy through unity.
The primary driver behind this proposal is to ensure the long-term sustainability and efficiency of AMA ACT's administrative functions and member support services. By becoming a branch of the federal AMA, the ACT branch will strengthen support for its members and improve its overall operational capacity by sharing resources, increasing access to skilled staff and providing greater continuity of services.
The move by the ACT follows AMA Tasmania's decision to become a branch of federal AMA in 2024, which became possible following changes to the AMA constitution in May of last year. Those changes ensured we can remain a powerful and trusted voice for you, well into the future, and can continue to achieve incredible results from our advocacy as well as support our smaller state and territory branches. Members can read an update from AMA Tasmania CEO Lara Gidding on her perspective of the merger a year on, on the federal AMA website .
Like AMA Tasmania, the principles of the merger will empower ACT AMA's ability to advocate for local issues. The proposed structure ensures that it will retain its current positions, including an ACT AMA President, and will continue to represent the interests of ACT members on the ground to government and other relevant stakeholders, even where this may conflict with a federal AMA position.
Members will vote on four key resolutions to formally unite AMA ACT with the federal AMA. The resolutions include ratifying the Deed of Transfer, approving voluntary winding up, transferring assets to the federal body, and appointing a liquidator to oversee the process.
The hybrid meeting at 7pm AEDT will accommodate both in-person attendance at the Barton offices and virtual participation via Microsoft Teams, ensuring all ACT members can shape the future of medical representation in the territory.
AMA ACT has prepared a comprehensive FAQ document for members and established proxy voting arrangements for those unable to attend. This vote represents a defining moment for ACT doctors - an opportunity to join a stronger, unified national voice while preserving their local advocacy.
