The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today concluded her participation in the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) High-Level Week in New York City.
During the High-Level Week, Minister Anand co-hosted and participated in high-level discussions with counterparts and international partners to advance Canada's foreign policy, security, and economic priorities, including support for Ukraine, progressing security and stability in Haiti, and supporting a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She engaged with key partners and coalitions such as the G7, Nordic-Baltic Eight, and Arctic Allies.
Minister Anand announced a series of initiatives to support Canada's international priorities, including:
- $31.4 million in humanitarian assistance for Yemen, supporting the delivery of life-saving assistance to vulnerable populations affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis
- $25.4 million to support security, governance and community resilience in Haiti, including efforts to combat corruption and organized crime, prevent youth recruitment by gangs, strengthen responses to gender-based violence and support local peacebuilding initiatives
- $27 million in humanitarian assistance to respond to needs of people affected by the crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
- $994,345 to help support efforts to strengthen democratic resilience and counter Russian malign influence
As part of Canada's ongoing efforts to address the Iranian regime's abhorrent conduct-from threats to international peace and security to pervasive human rights violations-and with a view to pressing for meaningful change, Minister Anand announced additional sanctions on September 23 against five individuals and five entities under the Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations for their role in the regime's brutal repression of its population. This is consistent with Canada's long-standing leadership of the UN General Assembly resolution on human rights in Iran, which it has led since 2003.
Minister Anand also advanced cooperation with partners on support for a two-state solution in the Middle East and on strengthening security, stability and governance efforts in Haiti.
Minister Anand delivered Canada's national statement to the UNGA, highlighting Canada's foreign policy priorities and leadership while reaffirming its commitment to working collaboratively with partners from around the world, promoting respect for international law and human rights, and supporting efforts to reform the UN so that it can continue to meet current and future challenges.
