Another costly blunder for Tasracing

Tasmanian Labor
  • Minister Howlett must step up
  • Mistakes have massive impact on industry
  • Reputational damage to Tas Racing industry
  • Labor is extremely concerned to see the cancellation last night of an important Tasracing meeting in Launceston and the costly postponement this has caused.

Labor's Shadow Racing Minister David O'Byrne said this is an embarrassment for Tasracing and comes at a time when the industry can least afford it.

"This is the second time this issue has occurred this year for a similar issue," Mr O'Byrne said.

"Labor understands the decision was based on safety concerns, but it causes further disruption to an industry that can ill afford it, particularly since the government shut down of racing earlier this year.

"This is the last thing the racing industry needs as it tries to recover for the earlier shutdown, and it costs trainers, owners and clubs dearly.

"It also causes further reputational damage to Tasracing with last night's blunder attracting national criticism.

"The Minister Jane Howlett needs to step up and outline today what measures she will be taking to make sure this doesn't happen again.

"The industry cannot afford to continue to be exposed to these kinds of blunders."

    David O'Byrne MP

    Shadow Minister for Racing
