Appeal after historic sexual assault - Strike Force Maheno

Detectives have released CCTV images and are appealing for public assistance as they reinvestigate an alleged historic sexual assault and robbery incident in Sydney's inner city.

In 2007, officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command received reports a man was allegedly sexually assaulted and robbed on Thursday 22 November while out in Surry Hills.

Despite exhaustive inquiries at the time, no charges were laid.

Earlier this year, new information came to light and Strike Force Maheno was established to reinvestigate the incident.

Detectives have now released CCTV images from the Surry Hills area in 2007, of a man who they believe could assist with inquiries.

The man depicted in the images is described as being of Caucasian appearance, of medium build with brown hair.

He was wearing a red, white and navy hat, a white and green striped polo shirt with sunglasses hanging from his collar, grey shorts, and black and white shoes with white socks.

The man is now believed to be aged in his early 40s.

Anyone who may know this man or has information that could assist investigators is urged to contact Surry Hills Police Station on (02) 9265 4144 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
