Colac Otway Shire Council has publicly affirmed its commitment to proactive planning for older members in its community with the signing of the Age-Friendly Victoria Declaration (the Declaration) by Mayor Jason Schram.

The Age-Friendly Declaration is a joint initiative of the Victorian Government and Municipal Association of Victoria based on the Age-Friendly Cities Framework developed by the World Health Organization.

The Declaration provides a foundation to support inclusive, accessible and liveable communities that enable people to age well.

U3A Colac Otway hosted an event during Victorian Senior's Festival to celebrate the signing of the Declaration.

"Today's signing of the Declaration publicly affirms Council's commitment to fostering a community in which older people are valued, heard and supported and in which people of all ages can live, contribute and belong," Cr Schram said.

"Colac Otway's older residents have shaped our community through their knowledge, skills, care and leadership.

"They've raised families, built businesses, tended farms and continue to make valuable contributions to the Shire we know today."

Colac Otway Shire has a higher-than-average ageing population with 31 per cent of residents are aged over 60.

The demographic trend of a higher proportion of older residents is expected to grow, increasing demand for accessible infrastructure, housing options, access to health services and opportunities for social connection.

"Council has a commitment to work alongside our older community members, to listen and consider age-friendly principles in Council decision-making.

"I particularly want to acknowledge the contribution of Colac Otway's older residents to community life through volunteering, mentoring, caring for family members, participating in local groups and sharing knowledge and experience," Cr Schram said.

The signed Colac Otway Shire Council Age-Friendly Community Declaration is available to view on Council's website.
