Former Premier of New South Wales the Hon Bob Carr AC and experienced non-executive director Maree O'Halloran AM have been appointed to the board of Sydney Water.
Mr Carr and Ms O'Halloran will serve three-year terms beginning on 17 November this year, as new Sydney Water CEO Darren Cleary joins the vital public water utility.
They will help guide Sydney Water as it delivers an ambitious capital program to service Sydney's growing population.
This includes significant water infrastructure upgrades and new projects across Sydney to support housing expansion, safe clean reliable drinking water and the protection of waterways and the environment.
Mr Carr, who served as Premier of NSW from 1995 to 2005 and Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2013, brings a distinguished career in public service to the task. His tenure as Premier was marked by substantial infrastructure projects and environmental initiatives.
Ms O'Halloran is an experienced corporate director, having served on boards including superannuation fund HESTA and insurer Teachers Federation Health. She is a former President of the NSW Teachers Federation.
The Government's appointments of Mr Carr and Ms O'Halloran follow those of several former senior government figures to positions of important public service in NSW, including:
- Former Primary Industries, Water, Forestry, Lands and Trade and Industry Minister the Hon Niall Blair to the board of Sydney Water (subsequently appointed Chair)
- Former Premier the Hon Dominic Perrottet to the board of TCorp
- Former Premier the Hon Nathan Rees to the board of Lord Howe Island.
Sydney Water is Australia's largest water utility and one of the state's most important publicly owned utilities. It provides water, wastewater, recycled water and some stormwater services to households and businesses across greater Sydney.
The Minns Labor Government is committed to building the sustainable future of the state's water systems and keeping Sydney Water in public hands.
The Shareholding Ministers have also approved the reappointment of non-executive director, Alexandra Fisher for a second term of three years.
