Ararat Community Shows Love At Cat Adoption Open Day

Ararat Rural City Council is celebrating the success of an adoption open day held last week at the Ararat Pound and Shelter on Pound Lane, which saw 10 cats and kittens find new homes.

The event also provided an opportunity for residents to update registrations and have their pets' microchips checked, helping to support responsible pet ownership across the municipality, and many residents took it up.

Dozens of people visited the shelter throughout the day, with many community members dropping in simply to spend time with the animals and offer a cuddle to the cats in care. Council officers said they were delighted with the turnout and the number of adoptions finalised on the day, noting that interest in pet adoption continues to grow in the Ararat region.

Mayor Cr Bob Sanders said the open day was a great example of the community getting behind local animals in need.

"Events like this really show what our community is all about," Cr Sanders said. "People took the time to come out, meet the cats, ask questions, and make thoughtful decisions about giving these animals a second chance in a safe, loving home. Our staff did a terrific job, and I want to thank every person who came through the gates, whether they adopted, checked a microchip, or just came for a pat and a chat."

"We know that pets are an important part of family life in Ararat," Cr Sanders said. "Seeing 10 cats and kittens head off to new homes is a fantastic result, and it is a reminder that when we work together, we can make practical improvements for animal welfare in our own backyard."

A small number of cats are still available for adoption through Council and are looking for their forever homes. Prospective adopters are encouraged to visit Council's PetRescue page or contact the Community Safety team to find their pawfect match and learn more about the adoption process, fees, and ongoing care requirements.
