Arrest and extradition of Serious Family Violence Offender from Queensland to Tasmania

A 26 year old Chigwell man was arrested by Queensland Police on Wednesday afternoon (26 October 2016) and will be extradited to Tasmania today, Tasmania Police say.

The arrest follows an ongoing investigation conducted by Glenorchy CIB in conjunction with interstate jurisdictions to locate him after he fled Tasmania.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested on a Tasmanian warrant for one count of rape related to a serious family violent incident which is alleged to have been committed on 19 July 2016 at a Chigwell home.

The man will also be charged with several other matters including failing to appear at the Supreme Court Hobart on unrelated matters.

The man fronted a Queensland Magistrate in a Cairns Court in relation to an application for extradition late yesterday. Two Glenorchy CIB Detectives are expected to return to Hobart Airport with the man this evening (Friday) around 9pm.

The man will be held by Tasmania Police to appear before a Tasmanian Justice of the Peace on Saturday morning.
