Aussie PM Holds Doorstop at Johannesburg Airport

Prime Minister

The Leaders of China and the United States are not attending the G20. Does this undermine the ability of the Summit to achieve a meaningful outcome and do you anticipate a Leaders' Declaration will be issued at the conclusion of the Summit?

ANTHONY ALBANESE, PRIME MINISTER: The G20 is such an important gathering. It's the most important gathering for which Australia is a member. It represents 85 per cent of the global economy, 75 per cent of global trade, and in addition to participating in the forums of the G20, I'll have important bilateral meetings with our trading partners including India, the European Union, as well as Germany, other partners as well.

It's important for us to engage because one in four of Australia's jobs depends upon trade, and it is important therefore that I represent Australia at forums like this, advancing Australia's economic interests and supporting Australian jobs.

JOURNALIST: Donald Trump says he's not attending the Summit over claims white South African farmers are being persecuted. Does Australia hold these concerns?

PRIME MINISTER: We speak up for Australia's national interests and it's in Australia's interest to participate as a medium power in events such as the G20, and I'm very pleased to be participating here in South Africa.

And indeed tomorrow I'll be going to the important Freedom Park. That is important because I'll have the great honour of unveiling three new names on the Honour Wall which is there, honouring people who fought against the apartheid regime and fought for democracy and freedom for all South Africans.

And tomorrow the names of Malcolm Fraser, Bob Hawke and Bruce Haigh will be added to that Wall, and that will be a great honour for Australia.

Thanks very much.
