ANSTO is part of a contingent showcasing Australian science at the Australian Pavilion at the World Expo Osaka in October.

Following a successful submission to highlight a food provenance technology, the Australian Government provided funding to ANSTO for a live show and panel discussion/VIP event to be held in the pavilion.
The live show will be staged over three days 8-10 October with two shows a day. A fun performance supported by video will highlight ANSTO's innovative approach to determining the origin of food and the development of an X-ray florescence scanning technology.

Education Manager Dr Bridget Murphy (above left) and Training and Education Coordinator Sarah Tyler (above right) are developing the live show, which explores the use of science in determining the origin of food.

Two collaborators in Japan, who are specialists in science communication, Prof Takeshi Iimoto of the University of Tokyo and Yoko Naro Watanabe of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, are acting as consultant advisors for the live shows.

A panel discussion with Japanese experts and Dr Debashish Mazumder (above centre), Leader, Food Provenance research ANSTO, moderated by Prof Jes Sammut (above right), Deputy Dean, External Engagement; Leader, Aquaculture Research Group (UNSW) and Honorary Research Fellow at ANSTO, will be held on Thursday 9 October. The Japanese participants on the panel include Dr Mayasuki Komatsu (above left), Chairman Institute of Ecosystem Research Japan; Dr Yaeko Suzuki (above second from left) of the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) and Mr Yasuharu Takashima (above second from right), Director Food and Agricultural Materials Inspection Center (FAMIC). This discussion will be followed by a networking dinner.
Panellists will explore the complexities of determining origin and the potential benefits of the new technology to support traceability requirements in the business and trade.
CEO Shaun Jenkinson said it was an opportunity to demonstrate how the Australian science and technology can ensure we know where our food comes from in a prestigious setting on the world stage.

Dr Mazumder (pictured above) said it was a great opportunity to explore potential research collaborations with Japan that could be beneficial to both countries. Australia and Japan have Country of Origin labelling
Australian dignitaries are expected to attend the event.
The World Expo is global event held every five years. The them is "Designing Future Society For Our Lives" with a focus on sustainability, technology and well-being.
ANSTO's events are taking place in a week when the theme is Sustainable Development Goals and Beyond and the focus is on 'Insights and Innovations for a vibrant society'.
There are a series of activities that week sponsored by Austrade, who is also aligned with the ANSTO events.
Leah Mitchell from the Government Team and Susan Bogle from the Communications Team have been coordinating ANSTO's participation in the event. Leah is Project Lead and Susan is working on content for the live shows and panel discussions.
ANSTO has produced a commemorative Periodic Table of the Elements in English and Japanese to support the events.
