Australia Appoints New Ambassador To Egypt

Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Today I announce the appointment of Mr Joel McGregor as Australia's next Ambassador to Egypt, with accreditation to Eritrea and Sudan.

Australia and Egypt share a close and longstanding relationship, built over more than 75 years of diplomatic engagement. The Governor-General of Australia's visit to Cairo in 2025, including discussions with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, reflected the warmth of our ties and our ambition to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Egypt is an important partner for Australia and an influential voice across the Middle East and Africa. We work together on regional and global challenges, with collaboration spanning trade and investment, security and humanitarian priorities.

Mr McGregor is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and has previously served overseas in Jordan, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Iraq.

I thank outgoing Ambassador Axel Wabenhorst for his contributions to advancing Australia's interests in Egypt since 2022.
