Australia endorses international Ocean Conservation Pledge at COP27

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

The Australian Government has endorsed the Ocean Conservation Pledge - a global movement calling on countries to conserve or protect at least 30% of the ocean within their jurisdiction by 2030.

Australia is a world leader in sustainable ocean management, with 45% of our ocean currently managed within marine protected areas.

Australia is now linking its domestic ambition and expertise with a global movement.

The global Pledge will be critical to safeguard marine life and improve the world's resilience to climate change.

The ocean is a great moderator for our climate. It's one of the world's largest and most important carbon sinks, and ocean currents play a critical role transporting heat around the globe.

The Government is acting to stamp out marine plastics and pollution and supporting Pacific neighbours as they confront the crises brought about by climate change and rising sea levels.

Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek said 'Endorsing the Ocean Conservation Pledge was an easy decision - because it lines up so perfectly with our government's increased ambition to protect and conserve our ocean.

'This pledge is another step in the right direction for Australia and the world, and something we are very proud to be a part of'.
