Australia Expands Emissions Certification to Back Industry

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

The Albanese Government has expanded the Guarantee of Origin (GO) Scheme, helping Australian producers to seize new opportunities in growing global markets for low-emissions products and supporting a Future Made in Australia.

The expanded scheme will enable emissions certification of aluminium, iron ore, biogas, biomethane, and additional hydrogen production pathways including gas reforming, solid gasification and pyrolysis.

These products join renewable hydrogen, which was made eligible for certification in 2025.

The Guarantee of Origin Scheme provides trusted information about the emissions associated with producing Australian-made products and certifies the use of renewable electricity, helping buyers make informed choices and producers demonstrate their credentials in increasingly competitive international markets.

As global demand for low-emissions commodities, fuels and manufactured products continues to grow, certification will help.

Australian businesses attract investment, unlock export opportunities and strengthen Australia's position as a reliable supplier of clean and responsibly produced goods.

The expansion follows extensive consultation with industry and stakeholders and is another step in building the policies needed to drive investment in Australia's industrial transformation.

The Government is also consulting and working on expanding the scheme to other products, including low-carbon liquid fuels, iron, alumina and ammonia.

The scheme is a key element of the Government's Future Made in Australia agenda, backing Australian manufacturing, regional jobs and new industries as the world decarbonises.

The scheme also supports other Future Made in Australia initiatives, including the Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive, which is available to renewable hydrogen producers that meet the incentive's eligibility requirements, including certification under the Guarantee of Origin framework.
