Greens climate change and energy spokesperson, Adam Bandt MP, today said that the latest Climate of the Nation report released by The Australia Institute reaffirmed that most Australians are concerned about how the climate crisis will exacerbate extreme weather events and want to see a phase out of coal to tackle the climate emergency.
"The government has no mandate for coal," said Mr Bandt.
"Nearly eight out of ten Australians want a plan to phase out coal power, something only the Greens are advocating.
"Two-thirds of Australians want coal-fired power generation ended within 20 years and 39% back the Greens plan to end it even sooner in 2030.
"The public wants Australia to quit coal and the Greens will keep pushing until that vision is realised.
"We've got a coal-addicted government and an opposition unwilling to tackle the biggest cause of climate change, namely the mining, burning and exporting of coal and gas.
"While Liberal and Labor fail to act on coal and gas, Australians know that the impacts of the climate crisis are being felt right now and there is no more time to delay. That's why we're calling on Parliament to declare a climate emergency and take the action we so desperately need."
