Australians Use BetStop to Self-Exclude from Online Gambling

BetStop - the National Self-Exclusion Register™ covers all Australian licensed interactive wagering service providers - both online and telephone-based - and prohibits these providers from opening an account or accepting a bet from self-excluded individuals, or sending them marketing material.

Australians are able to self-exclude for a minimum of 3 months to a lifetime, by registering free-of-charge and in a single interaction.

Of the 18,000 sign ups in the register's first 6 months, more than 16,000 remain active, while around 1,400 registrants have ended their exclusion either through completing their nominated self-exclusion period or cancelling their exclusion following the minimum 3 months.

Over this period, more than 8 billion checks have been made against the register, occurring in an average of 3 milliseconds per completed check to ensure that self-excluded individuals are unable to participate in online gambling.

Australians aged 40 years and under continue to represent the vast majority of registrants, with over a third of total registrants opting to exclude themselves for a lifetime.

Australia has the highest gambling losses per adult in the world, with a total of $25 billion in losses every year.
