Cessnock Library is inviting all literature, literary chat, and animal lovers to a truly charming event as highly regarded historian and lecturer Susannah Fullerton reveals the surprising influence of feline companions on some of the world's greatest authors.

Join us on Saturday 22 November 2025 from 11am to 12pm as Fullerton unveils the delightful stories behind her new book, Great Writers & the Cats Who Owned Them.

This unique event will explore the special, often essential, bond shared between 17 celebrated authors and their beloved – sometimes demanding – cats, from Charles Dickens' deaf cat, Bob, to Ernest Hemingway's extensive pride of 20, Fullerton brings fascinating historical anecdotes to life in a vivid, engaging, and fun style.

Other stories include:

  • Dr Johnson Hodge: the tale of the beloved cat that perhaps influenced the creation of the first English dictionary
  • Edward Lear's Foss: the less-than-perfect feline whose presence inspired the much-loved children's poem The Owl and the Pussycat
  • Robert Southey's Rumpelstilzchen: discover the poet's deep affection for cats, which extended far beyond his famous tale of Goldilocks

Library Programs & Promotions Team Leader Susan Davy said the library team was thrilled to be hosting what promised to be a truly engaging a delightful talk and book signing.

"This event is the perfect blend of history, humour, and heart-warming tales," said Ms Davy.

"It proves that behind every great writer, there was probably a cat demanding attention. Whether you're a lifelong cat person or just love a brilliant literary chat, this session is unmissable!"

This event is free to attend, but bookings are essential. Reserve your spot by visiting the 'What's on' section of the Library website or by calling Cessnock Library on 4993 4399 or Kurri Kurri Library on 4937 1638.
