Avoid Shopping Tricks When Treating Mum This Mother's Day

NSW Fair Trading

As Mum's across the State prepare to be showered with gifts on Sunday, NSW Fair Trading is offering advice to avoid shopping scams.

Consumers have protections against misleading or faulty products and refund rights but whether they choose flowers or chocolates, consumers must also take responsibility for what they buy and where from.

Compare product prices for the best deal and check business reviews to ensure the trader you are dealing with is reputable.

If choosing a gift card, shoppers are encouraged to do their due diligence as NSW Fair Trading received 376 complaints about gift cards, vouchers and coupons in 2023. Before buying, read the terms and conditions of the gift card, understand the refund and return policy and a minimum of three years expiry date in NSW before you hand over your money.

This careful approach to shopping is important for online shopping as it is in store.

Don't be rushed into buying a product, make sure to stick to your budget and spend sensibly, look back through your 'cart' before you click 'buy' and check a website is reputable to minimise the risk of any quality or delivery issues.

Mother's Day is a good time for shoppers to start using these tips to form new online and in-person habits and better protect themselves from an unnecessary spending spree or data dump.
