We're continuing to improve the quality and sustainability of Bayside's sports and recreation infrastructure.
Banksia Reserve sportsground in Beaumaris is highly used by local sports clubs and pet owners. To meet the increasing need for community sport and recreation facilities, we're reconstructing the surface.
From late September 2025, the oval will be closed for 12-months. This upgrade will improve the quality and safety of the playing surface for all users.
Upgrades to the ground's drainage, irrigation and surface level will improve ground integrity and provide a safer playing surface. Works will include the seeding of a natural sun/ heat resistant turf surface with cricket pitch, and perimeter fencing and AFL goal post upgrades.
To support local dog owners during this period, Council has established a small, fully fenced off-leash dog park adjacent to the main oval. This secure area provides a safe and convenient space for dogs to exercise while the main ground is closed for construction. A similar initiative was also successfully introduced at William Street Reserve during its 2023-2024 reconstruction, proving popular with local dog walkers.
When the renewed surface is back to full use by both community sport and the community, dogs will be welcome back on the main oval outside of organised sporting activities, with the same access as dog walkers currently enjoy. Council will also assess community feedback on the temporary dog park, and we'll monitor the sportsground condition and assess the impact of the alternative off-leash exercise areas. This information will help to determine whether it should remain as a permanent feature.
