Battery Milestone Bolsters QLD Grid, Fuels Energy Plan

  • The Crisafulli Government powers up one of Queensland's largest grid-scale batteries at Swanbank.
  • 250MW/500MWh Swanbank Battery is strengthening energy reliability and supporting peak demand.
  • The Crisafulli Government is delivering affordable, reliable and sustainable energy for Queenslanders.

The Crisafulli Government has taken another major step to strengthen Queensland's electricity network, with a new grid-scale battery now able to operate at full capacity to boost reliability.

Located at Government-owned CleanCo's Swanbank Energy Precinct in Ipswich, the 250MW/500MWh Swanbank Battery is one of the largest in Queensland and has reached a key commissioning milestone, able to operate at full output and support the State's electricity network while final regulatory and market approvals are completed.

The large-scale battery project, located alongside the Swanbank E gas-fired power station, is a practical example of the Crisafulli Government's Energy Roadmap which is grounded in economics and engineering unlike Labor's ideological hydrogen pipedreams.

The battery is being delivered under budget and will work in tandem with existing generation to provide fast-response energy support, improve system stability and help manage peak demand.

It's just one of the ways the Crisafulli Government is delivering a better lifestyle through a stronger economy after Labor's decade of decline.

With a two-hour storage and dispatch capacity, the Swanbank Battery can absorb excess energy when supply is high, and dispatch power back into the grid within seconds when it is needed, powering around 355,000 homes.

The Swanbank Battery complements existing generation at Swanbank E, demonstrating the Crisafulli Government's commitment to improving Queensland's existing energy assets while building what is needed for the future.

Treasurer and Minster for Energy David Janetzki said the successful delivery of the Swanbank Battery demonstrates the Crisafulli Government is delivering affordable, reliable and sustainable energy for Queenslanders.

"This grid-scale battery is exactly the kind of modern infrastructure our Energy Roadmap is designed to deliver, technology that keeps the lights on, supports renewables and strengthens reliability for Queenslanders," Treasurer Janetzki said.

"At Swanbank, we can see how batteries and gas generation work together to support system reliability, particularly during peak demand periods.

"This demonstrates how existing energy infrastructure can be used to advance new technologies and that will help meet Queensland's future energy needs."

CleanCo Chief Executive Officer Tom Metcalfe said the Swanbank Battery was a major milestone for CleanCo and for Ipswich.

"The Swanbank Battery is a critical addition to CleanCo's portfolio, providing greater flexibility to supply reliable, lower-emissions energy to our customers when it's needed most," Mr Metcalfe said.

"At full capacity, the battery can deliver up to 250MW of electricity for two hours during peak demand periods.

"This project reflects the continued evolution of the Swanbank site, from coal to gas-fired stations and now battery storage, reinforcing CleanCo's role in supporting Queensland's energy system with dependable, lower-emission firming generation."

CleanCo partnered with Energy Queensland to help deliver the project, with Tesla supplying the battery technology.
