Bay Burglars Busted and Jailed Without Bail

Eastern Bay of Plenty Police are acknowledging frontline staff's outstanding work on a series of burglaries around Ōpōtiki that resulted in multiple arrests, the recovery of stolen property, and significant reassurance for victims and the wider community.

Within days of a residential burglary at Waiotahi, where a home was ransacked and several vehicles were stolen, Police launched a coordinated investigation that quickly identified suspects and enabled a series of search warrants to be executed across the Ōpōtiki district.

Police recovered stolen vehicles, including a Mercedes-Benz and Ford Falcon, as well as other property taken during the offending. Multiple offenders were arrested and appeared in court facing burglary and related charges.

Eastern Bay of Plenty Prevention Manager Inspector Phil Gillbanks said the outcome demonstrates the value of proactive policing, thorough investigations, and strong teamwork.

"Burglary is an extremely invasive crime. Beyond the financial loss, it leaves victims feeling violated and unsafe in their own homes. Bringing offenders before the courts and recovering stolen property is incredibly important for victims and for the wider community.

"The speed at which these investigations progressed is a credit to our staff. From initial scene examinations and victim enquiries through to intelligence gathering, search warrants, vehicle stops, arrests and interviews, staff remained focused on identifying those responsible and holding them to account.

"The successful outcome highlights the commitment of Ōpōtiki Police to keeping the community safe," he says.

In total, five offenders have been arrested, with Police opposing bail. Multiple items of stolen property have been recovered and returned to their rightful owners, providing some closure for those affected.

Police continue to encourage members of the public to report suspicious activity promptly and to provide any information that may assist investigations.
