Beary beautiful Gallery reopening

Bayside Gallery has been overrun by bears just in time for its post-lockdown reopening.

We will open our doors to the public again on 5 November and visitors are in for a cuddly treat.

Textile artist Cat Rabbit has transformed the space into The Soft Library - a fantastical library run by bears, or 'libearians', many of whom are famous literary characters.

The library houses books and animations and a special giant 'storytime' bear who invites visitors to sit and enjoy an audio story.

This wonderful exhibition - crafted from felt and fabric - celebrates the freedom found in play and pays tribute to the library as a place for curiosity and learning.

"It's a place to discover new stories and ideas and is an exhibition for all ages, presenting a fantastical world," Cat said.

Bayside artist Michelle Zuccolo's The encounter also opens at the gallery on 5 November.

She brings together paintings and drawings focusing largely on portraits and still life subjects.

Several of Zuccolo's taxidermized animals and birds are included in the exhibition.

"It is a privilege for me to be able to present a survey of my work in this gallery for my local community," Michelle said.

Bayside libraries will also open on 5 November and our staff would love to see you.

As you browse, look out for our Hot Reads - 42 great titles waiting for discovery.

And we are delighted to join 48 other Victorian public libraries for the Big Summer Read, supporting children's literacy in a fun and engaging way.

Please be patient and kind as our gallery and libraries' staff navigate new rules and operating methods.
