Belarus's Route to Europe Pivots on Strasbourg

CoE/secretary general

Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić has written an opinion article together with the leading representative of the Belarusian democratic forces Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, emphasising the organisation's key role in supporting the future transition of Belarus to democracy.

After ceasing contact with the dictatorial regime in Minsk, in 2022 the Council of Europe established a Contact Group with Belarusian democratic forces and civil society. It was a pioneering initiative that now serves as a model for other organisations. The Council's experience in supporting and monitoring European countries' democratic transition provides a framework for Belarus to follow.

The article has been published by the pan-European broadcaster Euronews in seven languages: English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Russian and Spanish.
