The Cessnock Library team is thrilled to welcome acclaimed historical fiction author Sue Williams for an exclusive discussion of her new novel The Duke's Secret on Saturday, 21 February, from 11am to 12pm.

The Duke's Secret is a spellbinding blend of fact, fiction, and personal discovery. From the bestselling author of Elizabeth & Elizabeth and The Governor, His Wife and His Mistress, the new novel is a richly woven tale inspired by Williams' own family legend. The story unfolds across two centuries: in early 19th century England, a young maid named Mary Ann forms a forbidden bond with a charismatic British army officer - revealed to be Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington. As he departs for the Battle of Waterloo, their secret passion results in an illegitimate daughter, Elizabeth.

Two hundred years later, in Australia, a woman reunites with her long-lost father and hears the astonishing family claim: descent from that very maid and the Iron Duke himself. Driven by curiosity and doubt, she embarks on a journey to uncover the truth - unearthing revelations that shock her, her family, and even historians.

Acting Library Services Co-ordinator Andrew Powell said Williams' new work masterfully brought together romance, betrayal, and historical intrigue in a deeply personal narrative.

"Her ability to weave real family history into a compelling fiction is remarkable," said Mr Powell.

"We're proud to host her at our library and give our community the chance to hear firsthand about the mystery that spans continents and centuries."

Praised as "a rollicking good story" by Kyra Geddes, bestselling author of The Story Thief, and lauded by Belinda Alexandra, author of The Masterpiece, as "historical fiction at its best", The Duke's Secret cements Williams' reputation as a master storyteller who breathes life into untold histories.
