Bjarklev to Assess EU Research, Innovation Programmes

Technical University of Denmark

The European Commission has just appointed an expert group to mid-term evaluate the EU's Horizon Europe funding programme. One of the 15 new members is DTU President Anders Bjarklev, who is among 359 applicants from four different continents.

Horizon Europe funds research and innovation activities across Europe focusing on strengthening excellent research and solving global challenges – and has a total budget of around €100 billion. DTU has received almost one billion DKK from Horizon Europe from 2021 to 2023.

Anders Bjarklev will help evaluate the first results from Horizon Europe. The work is expected to be completed by the end of next year and will form the basis for the next funding programme, which runs from 2028 to 2035.

"I look forward to working with the other participants in the expert group and to help solve EU's challenges through research and innovation," says Anders Bjarklev.

Best technical university in Europe

He emphasizes that he has been appointed as an expert in terms of his personal capacity, but that the European Commission has probably also weighted DTU's visible participation in the EU's research and innovation programmes as well as DTU's strong innovation culture.

Most recently, DTU has achieved a status as the best technical university in Europe. DTU's research and study programmes have thus achieved first place on the new list, EngiRank, which ranks 225 technical universities in 27 EU countries. The ranking is based on recognised EU data sources such as CORDIS and Erasmus+, as well as publication and citation statistics based on the Scopus database and patent statistics from the European Patent Office.

With a special focus on the EU, EngiRank includes the universities' successes in raising research funds and sheds light on how students apply for education at technical universities in the EU.
