Boating facility projects get funding boost

  • Eight local governments receive funding boost for new boating facilities
  • $1.5 million worth of grants awarded through Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme
  • Funding shared by local government authorities from Karratha to Busselton
  • Major projects to proceed at South Yunderup, Denham and Geraldton

Boat ramps and facilities from Karratha to Busselton will see a major boost following the allocation of $1.5 million in State Government grants.

A total of eight projects were successful in securing funding in the latest round of the Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme (RBFS) which supports local authorities as they work to provide improved infrastructure for boat owners.

The Shire of Murray received the largest allocation with a $478,113 grant to install four new floating jetties, a universal access pathway and improved boat trailer parking at the Wharf Cove boating facility in South Yunderup, while the Shire of Shark Bay secured $314,413 to construct a new finger jetty at the Denham boat ramp.

Boating facility managers can apply to the Department of Transport for grants up to 75 per cent of the estimated project cost, with the maximum amount limited to $750,000.

The RBFS has supported a total of 456 projects across the State, with nearly $50 million in funding provided to local governments.

Applications can be made for the planning, construction or upgrade of boat launching ramps, jetties, moorings and new channels that are directly related to a public boating facility. Eligible land-based infrastructure at public boating facilities include trailer parking, toilets, fish cleaning stations, lighting and signage.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"Boating is an incredibly popular pastime for many Western Australians, and investing in improvements to facilities across the State ensures we support local economies and businesses that rely on the boating industry.

"The Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme recognises and supports the important role that local governments play in providing improved and safer facilities for recreational boat owners throughout WA.

"Across its lifetime, the RBFS has supported a total of 456 projects across the State, with nearly $50 million in funding provided to local governments.

"Boat owners can also take some credit as they directly contribute to the scheme when they pay their boat registration fees."
