Boosting Health Services and Creating Jobs: Construction Commences on the Nightcliff Renal Unit Facility

The Territory Labor Government is improving access to quality health services with construction works commencing on the new $10.5 million Nightcliff renal Unit (NRU) Facility.

Hundreds of Territorians rely on life-saving dialysis treatments every year, and many Darwin locals rely on treatment at the Nightcliff Renal Unit Facility.

This critical unit will continue to treat Territorians while construction of a new centre is underway.

The works delivered by local contractor Sitzler will be undertaken in three stages to maintain high quality patient care.

The expansion and upgrade will provide a fit for purpose clinical services facility that will improve the functionality and the patient care environment and increase the capacity from 28 to 32 dialysis chairs.

Alongside the upgraded treatment area, works will include a new patient consultation and reception area, new staff area including additional office space, improved parking facilities and site landscaping.

The development creates more than 120 jobs during construction, including 17 Aboriginal employees and seven apprentices.

Works are anticipated to be completed by February 2020.

As stated by the Minister for Health, Natasha Fyles:

The Territory Labor Government is creating jobs and improving health services. These upgrades to the Nightcliff Renal Unit Facility will support more than 120 local jobs and provide a much needed boost to renal services.

End stage renal failure is a life-threatening condition affecting too many Territorians, and we have to ensure that every Territorian can access quality dialysis services they need.

The Nightcliff Renal Unit Facility will ensure Territorians can access lifesaving dialysis treatments in the Territory.

As stated by the Member for Arafura, Lawrence Costa:

Kidney disease is already a big problem on the Tiwi Islands and across the Territory and its important for our mob to have access to quality health services the Nightcliff Renal Facility is a great support for our community.
