Boranup Death Investigation

Margaret River Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who died while abseiling at Brides Cave in Boranup yesterday, Thursday 16 March 2023.
Police were initially called to the popular abseiling site about 3:20pm to support St John WA and DFES State Emergency Service volunteers with the medical evacuation of a 53-year-old man who had fallen during an abseiling activity at the site.
The man was facilitating an abseiling excursion with a group of students and teachers from a secondary school in the metropolitan area. A number of students and teachers had already abseiled down to the bottom of the cave area when the instructor fell. First aid was provided to the man until an RAC Rescue helicopter paramedic was lowered down into the cave and took over care of the patient.
Tragically, the man became unresponsive and was unable to be revived. He died at the scene.
WorkSafe have been advised of the incident, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
DFES State Emergency Service volunteers and colleagues of the deceased man were able to provide guidance and instruction to safely recover the deceased, students and teachers from the bottom of the cave.
