Boroondara Council to launch Climate Action Plan

The City of Boroondara's Climate Action Plan will be driven by comprehensive community consultation and sustainable initiatives.

In its final meeting of 2019, Council resolved to replace its Our Low Carbon Future Strategy with a Climate Action Plan in 2020. The Climate Action Plan will focus on activities within our City with practical initiatives following robust discussions with the community.

Council will add more environmental initiatives to over 60 existing and proposed commitments, bringing together a wide range of climate strategies into one. Community views will be sought to shape the plan.

"We need to listen to our community, accelerate meaningful action and implement strategies within our boundaries for a more sustainable Boroondara", said Mayor of Boroondara Cr Cynthia Watson.

As part of our commitment to improve our City's environmental sustainability, Council will continue to implement policies to reduce pollution, protect biodiversity and invest in renewable energy technology, among many other initiatives aimed at minimising our environmental footprint.

This Climate Action Plan will continue to demonstrate the City's care for its environment. In 2019, Council committed to purchase 100% clean electricity and has installed solar photovoltaics systems on council buildings. We are also expanding beyond just energy efficiency by investing in biodiversity, waste management strategies, pollution reduction and sustainable transport initiatives across the municipality.

"Our goal is to create a sustainable community. The Climate Action Plan will help ensure there is a more sustainable environment for future generations", said Cr Watson.
