A pilot program connecting students with older community members is creating new friendships and learnings across generations. Council have partnered with Beaumaris Secondary College to deliver Classroom Connections. The program is designed to engage students with their curriculum in a practical way while building intergenerational connections that challenge ageism.
Meeting fortnightly, students and participants explored topics from the school's vocational major curriculum by participating in activities including making music playlists, no contact boxing-style training and one-on-one interviews.
The sessions encouraged curiosity, collaboration and fun, with both groups learning from each other while exploring new topics. A highlight was the session on artificial intelligence (AI). Students guided their older peers through creative AI tools to transform pet dogs into people, turn participants into superheroes, and even helped plan a European holiday.
