Brisbane's LGBTI+ community rolls up its sleeves with pride

JOINT STATEMENT

Queenslanders have marched with pride and rolled up their sleeves to get vaccinated at a pop-up clinic at the Brisbane Pride Fair Day, Rally and March today.

Speaking at the Brisbane Pride Rally, Minister for Communities and Housing Leeanne Enoch praised the LGBTIQ+ community, for its efforts in keeping Queensland COVID safe and getting vaccinated.

"Brisbane Pride Festival is the third largest LGBTIQ+ pride festival in Australia and Queensland's biggest LBGTIQ+ event," Ms Enoch said.

"The Fair Day, Rally and March is the feature event of Pride Festival and is an opportunity for LGBTIQ+ Queenslanders, their friends and family to gather, connect and celebrate the many achievements of the LGBTIQ+ community towards achieving equality.

"This event going ahead now, after being delayed in early October due to COVID-19, is a real testament to the hard work of Queenslanders over the past few weeks.

"I encourage all Queenslanders, particularly those in our LGBTIQ+ community, to go and get vaccinated and keep their friends and family safe."

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Yvette D'Ath said the Brisbane Pride Fair Day, Rally and March, provided the perfect opportunity to support the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQ+ Queenslanders.

"The Fair Day, Rally and March injected a wonderful splash of colour and vibrancy across Brisbane today, providing us with the opportunity to connect, celebrate and support LGBTIQ+ Queenslanders," Minister D'Ath said.

"I would like to thank everyone who attended and supported today's event, especially those who rolled up their sleeves and got vaccinated at our pop-up clinic.

"Vaccinations don't just protect us, our family, our friends and our community – they also play a large part in getting back to doing the things we love like gathering together and celebrating who we are."

The Queensland Government provided more than $110,000 in sponsorship for this year's Brisbane Pride Festival.

Ms Enoch said the Queensland Government was a proud supporter of the LGBTIQ+ community.

"Since being elected in 2015, we've worked hard to ensure that all Queenslanders, regardless of their sexuality or gender, are treated equally and respectfully," she said.

"This includes passing legislation to allow adoption for same-sex couples, overturning convictions of historic consensual homosexual activity, removing the gay panic defence and equalising the age of consent."
