Housing Minister Peter Tinley has announced the appointment of a demolition contractor for Brownlie Towers - a 300-unit apartment complex in Bentley developed as part of a broader precinct in 1969-70.
More than half of the building's 300 units were deemed uninhabitable after much of the plumbing system failed. The remaining units were assessed as no longer providing appropriate accommodation of acceptable quality.
Demolition of the complex allows the land to be incorporated into the Bentley 360 redevelopment project, one of Perth's biggest urban infill opportunities.
Delta Group Pty Ltd were awarded the $4.2 million contract after the Department of Communities ran a competitive tender process between May and October this year. It will start demolition in early 2019. Instead of explosives, excavators will be used to deconstruct both tower blocks floor by floor.
Telecommunication equipment currently located on the roof of Brownlie Towers will undergo temporary relocation to the north-west corner of the site before it is permanently shifted onto a future building within the Bentley 360 development.

"The appointment of a demolition contractor for Brownlie Towers is a critical milestone for the broader Bentley 360 project which will deliver at least 1,500 new residences only 15 minutes from the centre of Perth.
"The project is expected to create more than 2,200 jobs across the course of development and inject an estimated $1.089 billion into the State's economy during construction.
"Bentley 360 provides an exciting opportunity for the department and its future development partner to drive one of WA's most significant medium-to-high density urban infill projects."
