Council is inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) from Community Housing Providers (CHPs) as the next step in exploring opportunities for future use of the Temporary Housing Village on Tweed Street, Brunswick Heads.
The 58-dwelling Village was established by the NSW Government on Council-owned land at 125 Tweed Street after the 2022 Northern Rivers floods. NSW Government funding and management of the Village is due to end and there's an opportunity for Council to retain the site for future housing.
"The Byron Shire housing crisis is not letting up and our vision is for this site to continue delivering the vital housing our community needs," Byron Shire Mayor, Sarah Ndiaye said.
"We're looking for Community Housing Providers who can think outside the box and help us find a financially self-sustaining housing model that is suitable for this Brunswick Heads location," she said.
The EOI, which opened on 11 September, is for a five-year lease of the site from 1 July, 2027.
Any potential lease will need planning approval, transfer of the building assets into Council's ownership, and a financially sustainable operating model.
"We're looking for Community Housing Providers who are innovators and have a proven track record of quality housing outcomes," the Mayor said.
The EOI has two stages:
Stage 1: Nomination Opportunity: nominations are assessed against Council's mandatory criteria and close 24 September 2026.
Stage 2: Submission Opportunity: eligible Providers identified through the Nomination Opportunity will be invited to lodge a detailed submission by 26 October 2026.
