Piling works on the new Buangor Ben-Nevis Road bridge are now complete, with construction of the bridge abutments underway as Ararat Rural City Council progresses this important upgrade near Warrak.
The project remains on track for completion by 13 March 2026, with upcoming works to include construction of the bridge crossheads and pedestals before installation of the new precast concrete, double-span bridge deck. The $1.3 million project will deliver a modern bridge designed for a minimum 100-year life for major structural elements, improved flood immunity, and safety barriers that meet current standards.
The new structure will comply with SM1600 load ratings, ensuring it can safely accommodate heavy vehicles and farm machinery that rely on Buangor Ben-Nevis Road as a key connection between Buangor, Bayindeen, Warrak, and Mount Cole Creek. This bridge renewal is part of a broader program to strengthen and renew culverts and bridges along the route over the next three years, improving access for local residents, businesses, and visitors.
Ararat Rural City Council CEO, Dr Tim Harrison, said the project was a strong example of Council's focus on long-term, evidence-based investment in local roads.
"Piling is a significant step in any bridge build, and reaching this stage gives us real confidence that we are on schedule to deliver the new Buangor Ben-Nevis bridge by mid-March," Dr Harrison said. "This bridge has been designed to stand up to the demands of modern freight and farming, and to the changing climate, so that it continues to serve our rural communities for decades to come."
During construction, Buangor Ben-Nevis Road will remain closed to through traffic at the bridge site, with all light and heavy vehicles detoured via Ararat, adding approximately 38 kilometres and 19 minutes to travel times. A temporary crossing cannot be provided due to ecological sensitivities at the site, and Council appreciates the community's cooperation with the traffic management measures in place.
Council will continue to provide updates on the Buangor Ben-Nevis Road and bridge improvements as the project moves through the next stages of construction, including installation of the bridge deck and final road approaches ahead of the planned March completion.
