A significant increase in family and domestic violence accommodation is one step closer with the appointment of Shelford Constructions Pty Ltd to deliver the Stirling Women's Centre redevelopment.

The Cook Labor Government's investment of $22.6 million to redevelop the centre, which is operated by the City of Stirling, will increase accommodation for women and children escaping family and domestic violence from five rooms to 16 independent units.

These units will be clustered around communal and support facilities and will be built to a 7-star NatHERS energy-efficiency rating.

Three units will be built to a Silver Livable Housing Standard, providing an inclusive and accessible living environment for those with mobility limitations escaping family and domestic violence.

Shelford Constructions is a Rockingham-based builder with more than 30 years' experience in delivering large-scale government and commercial construction projects.

Architectural firm Whitehaus designed the new Stirling Women's Centre, incorporating diverse community needs informed through ongoing consultation with representatives from culturally and linguistically diverse, lived experience, and Aboriginal communities.

The project forms part of the State Government's $700 million investment into family and domestic violence since 2017.

As stated by Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence Minister Jessica Stojkovski:

"The redevelopment of the Stirling Women's Centre is a major project which will significantly increase family and domestic violence accommodation capacity in Perth's northern suburbs.

"New purpose-built refuge facilities go a long way to ensuring women and children escaping violence are offered a safe space and treated with dignity and respect.

"I am proud of the Cook Labor Government's role in delivering this facility as part of our commitment to building safe and inclusive communities and I have no doubt that this facility will make a real difference to the lives of victim-survivors.

"Our government looks forward to working with Shelford to deliver this crucial infrastructure project that will help to keep women and children safe and support them as they rebuild their lives."

Comments attributed to Housing and Works Minister John Carey:

"The redevelopment and expansion will ensure the Stirling Women's Centre will be fit for purpose for another 50 years.

"We are increasing the number of units, so that more women and children escaping family and domestic violence will have access to the life-changing benefits of safe and supported accommodation.

"Our government is investing to deliver more crisis and emergency accommodation, in addition to our record spend to deliver more social homes and affordable rentals."

Comments attributed to Morley MLA Amber Jade Sanderson:

"Women and children escaping domestic violence will benefit greatly from this new and expanded accommodation facility in my electorate.

"The Cook Labor Government is proud to be delivering a crisis response facility locally to assist those in need of support, particularly culturally and linguistically diverse communities."
