  • Redevelopment to deliver expanded emergency department, increased operating theatre capacity and additional medical and intensive care beds
  • Western Australia's largest country hospital will also be home to a healthcare training, education and research centre

The Cook Government's $471.5 million Bunbury Regional Hospital redevelopment has reached an important construction milestone with ground works underway on a new seven-storey clinical tower and helideck.

The project is Western Australia's biggest ever regional hospital redevelopment, and once complete, will be a modern community healthcare hub for the South West region.

After undertaking enabling site works, managing contractor Multiplex Perkins Unincorporated Joint Venture is forging ahead with stage one of construction.

This includes work on a new clinical tower and helideck, refurbishment of existing facilities for a dedicated new mental health observation unit, an expanded acute psychiatric unit and refurbishment of the central energy plant.

The commencement of piling works involves the installation of structural columns that will form the foundations of the clinical tower, which will be topped by a helipad landing site to provide direct access to operating theatres.

Once complete, the Bunbury redevelopment will deliver an expanded emergency department, more operating theatres, a new central sterilisation department, new and expanded maternity, birthing and neonatal services and increased in-patient wards.

It will also include new emergency access mental health facilities, new clinical equipment, refurbished and expanded support facilities, and boosted digital capabilities.

The redevelopment will also be home to WA's first regional healthcare training, education and research centre.

As stated by Premier Roger Cook:

"My government is investing heavily in regional health infrastructure to ensure every Western Australian, no matter where they live, can access the care they need, when they need it.

"This project represents the biggest investment in regional health infrastructure ever made in WA, which will deliver more beds and modern medical services for this important region.

"As Western Australia's largest regional hospital, Bunbury will be a flagship modern health facility - a hub for care, innovation, and education that will service the entire South West region."

As stated by Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey:

"The redevelopment of Bunbury Regional Hospital is the biggest ever redevelopment of a regional health campus in Western Australian history.

"This $471.5 million investment will upgrade and expand the health services available to the Bunbury and broader South West community.

"Construction has reached an important milestone with piling works underway, including the installation of structural columns for the foundations of the clinical tower.

"The redevelopment includes an expanded emergency department, increased theatre capacity, additional beds and expanded mental health facilities, as well as new and expanded maternity, birthing and neonatal services.

"It is part of our government's ambitious $3.2 billion health infrastructure program."

As stated by Health Minister Meredith Hammat:

"The new and improved Bunbury Regional Hospital will be home to country WA's first healthcare training, education and research centre.

"It will support ongoing professional development for clinicians and attract new talent to the region, strengthening the local healthcare workforce to meet the evolving needs of this growing community.

"This redevelopment will put Bunbury at the forefront of regional healthcare in our State and deliver on our government's commitment to supporting the wellbeing of our South West communities for decades to come."

As stated by South West Minister and Bunbury MLA Don Punch:

"The redevelopment of Bunbury Regional Hospital is significant not just for the city of Bunbury but for the wider South West region.

"Once complete, it will provide our growing community with access to the facilities it needs and provide ongoing employment not just during the construction phase but well into the future.

"This will be a fantastic asset for the region, and I am thrilled to see it has reached the next milestone."
