Bundilla Beach Revamp Puts Community First

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin is proud to announce the successful completion of the Bundilla Beach Masterplan (Phase One), a major revitalisation project that has transformed one of the city's most iconic waterfront areas into a vibrant, inclusive and accessible destination for residents and visitors alike.

The revitalisation is part of an ongoing partnership with the Northern Territory Government to build a more vibrant, sustainable and liveable tropical capital. City of Darwin invested $500,000, with an additional $3 million committed by the Northern Territory Government to develop and deliver Phase One of the broader Masterplan project.

Delivered within budget, the Bundilla Beach Masterplan Phase One works represent a significant investment in community infrastructure, amenity and future-focused public space. The project reimagines the foreshore as a place to gather, play, exercise and relax - day or night -all year round.

City of Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the transformation reflects Council's commitment to inclusive, resilient public spaces:

"Bundilla Beach has always held a special place in the hearts of Darwin residents, and now it's a place we can be proud of once again. We've created a space that is welcoming, active, and safe and we've done it in a way that respects the natural beauty and future needs of our city."

"The Bundilla Beach Masterplan is more than just a project, it's a promise to deliver a connected, community-first Darwin for generations to come." added the Lord Mayor.

Among the standout new features is an activity hub, providing a safe, interactive space for children and a scenic escape for families. Lighting for the footpaths, BBQ's and the toilets have been improved and are all solar powered, a first for City of Darwin. Sunset lawns and improved beach access allow visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the coastline, while new BBQ shelters and tables offer spots for picnics and gatherings.

Two fully fenced dog parks have been added for pet lovers, alongside smart CCTV poles, public lighting and Wi-Fi, with street food enabling infrastructure enhancing safety, activation, and atmosphere across the space.

Active recreation is supported with a FIBA 3x3 basketball court, shared user paths, exercise nodes, picnic shelter and improved greenspace irrigation, creating a more walkable and lusher environment.

The project is a leading example of circular economy principles in action, too:

  • 87 tonnes of asphalt and 398 tonnes of concrete were crushed and repurposed for other projects.
  • All soil from excavation was reused onsite for landscaping.
  • Scrap metal from the previous toilet block was fully recycled.

Delivered by Jaytex Construction, the construction for Phase One began in September 2024 and was completed in June 2025.

"Jaytex Construction is proud to have partnered with City of Darwin on the successful delivery of Phase One of the Bundilla Beach Masterplan. This revitalisation project reflects our shared commitment to creating high-quality, sustainable, and inclusive public spaces for the Darwin community" said Matthew Moss, Managing Director, Jaytex Construction

"From solar-powered infrastructure to the use of recycled construction materials, this project sets a benchmark for future-focused development in the Territory. We're particularly proud to have delivered these works on time and within budget, while maintaining the integrity of Bundilla Beach's natural beauty. It has been a privilege to help bring this vibrant coastal precinct to life, and we look forward to seeing it enjoyed by residents and visitors for years to come." Moss added.

The next phase of the Bundilla Beach Masterplan is set to focus on the consolidation of key foreshore recreational areas associated with re-aligned Atkins Drive and associated parking.

Other elements incorporated in Phase Two of the Masterplan will include the enhancement of pedestrian and bicycle access and circulation with improved links and associated planting for cooling and upgraded of parking and enhanced canopy shade along East Point Road.
