Buyers sought for Territory bulls

Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade's (DITT) annual bull sale will be held this morning to sell 97 bulls bred for the Territory's climate and markets.

Today's online auction will see 62 Brahman and 35 Tropical Composite highly fertile and climatically adapted bulls on offer from 10:00am.

The online auction meets COVID-19 requirements of physical distancing which can be challenging to manage in a live sale environment. As an added advantage, the online auction ensures these bulls are available to industry and buyers from Western Australia and Queensland as well as the Northern Territory.

Supporting beef cattle production is an important ongoing focus for the department to help industry to drive growth and diversification of this long-standing, established sector. This industry continues to make a significant economic contribution to regional communities throughout the Northern Territory.

One of the ways the department is assisting the cattle industry is through the sale of quality livestock. Bull selection is critical for profitability, as the bull selected today can influence the genetic makeup and performance of the herd for the next 10 years.

In 2020, 92 bulls out of 97 presented were sold.

The 2021 annual bull sale will be conducted online by AuctionsPlus with a full catalogue provided by Elders.

Interested buyers who registered at auctionsplus.com.au to take part in the DITT 2021 Bull Sale can bid from 10:00am.

Quotes from Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade Deputy CEO Luke Bowen:

"The annual bull sale provides industry with the opportunity to access quality genetics.

"These bulls are the result of years of department research. Over the past few decades, we've conducted breeding programs based on selecting traits relevant to Northern Territory environmental conditions and live export production systems including fertility, functionality and adaptation.

"The popularity of the bull sale is growing as our herds are known for their high fertility and adaption to the Territory's climate and conditions.

"The high clearance rate demonstrates the great value placed on this breeding program by industry seeking to maximise their herd productivity and performance. Together with industry we are breeding and raising Territory tough cattle."
