Cairns trending towards recovery

Unemployment rates in Cairns have continued to fall, Jobseeker recipients have decreased and passenger movements at Cairns Airport are on the up.

The latest data from the Cairns Economic Dashboard, tabled at Council today, revealed that the unemployment rate for the Cairns Local Government Area (LGA) fell from 5.5% in the June quarter to 4.9% in the September quarter 2021.

The unemployment rate for the broader Cairns SA4 region was at 4.8% in January 2022, compared with 6.1% one year ago.

Monthly Jobseeker recipients have decreased slightly from December 2021 (9,418) to January 2022 (8,960).

In a boost for the region, passenger movements at Cairns Airport are increasing following a decline at the end of January 2022.

Domestic passenger movements this year are unsurprisingly above 2021 levels, but as of March remain below pre-COVID levels in 2019 and 2020.

Consumer spending in the Cairns LGA decreased from December to January – from $417 million to $357 million, although this is an increase from January 2021 ($297 million).
