Registrations of interest are being called for the planned boat pens at the Port Hedland Spoilbank Marina as design work for the facility continues.
The State Government has engaged an international expert to provide advice in progressing the detailed entrance design for the marina, who will be visiting Perth next week to work with those involved in the project.
Jack Cox from the Academy of Coastal, Ocean, Port and Navigation Engineers in the USA is regarded as an international authority on marina design, having worked on more than 400 port and waterway developments around the world.
The marina concept includes boat pens, a two-lane boat ramp, two breakwaters and internal revetment walls and an access channel separating marina traffic from shipping activity. In addition to the marina there will also be public open recreational space and improved public access, parking, toilet facilities and areas for pop-up stalls.
The State Government has commenced collection of wave and current data from the site, known for its high tidal range, strong tides, changing landforms and the threat of cyclone attack.
Boat owners must pay an initial $1,000 fee to register their interest in a boat pen at the facility. To register interest in a boat pen, visit http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/phmarina or email [email protected]. Registrations close on July 19, 2019.
As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
"The concept plan for the marina, released last year, shows long-term capacity for up to 45 boat pens. However, registrations received in this process will assess demand and guide the number and size of pens to be delivered in the initial construction project.
"Determining the current demand for pens and the collection of data, including vital measurements and a hydrographic survey from Cyclone Veronica recently, will inform decision making as the project moves forward and benefits from the expertise and knowledge of Jack Cox.
"The important work will help advance planning from the concept stage to a detailed design that maximises the functionality and safety of the marina."

"This is another fantastic step forward for the Spoilbank Marina.
"Hedland boat owners now have the opportunity to register for a boat pen, to help guide the final design for the number and size of pens at the marina.
"The McGowan Government is getting on with delivering this long-awaited project for the Hedland community."
