Caloundra Traffic Relief Milestone: Upgrade Fast-Tracked

JOINT STATEMENT
  • The Crisafulli Government is getting on with the job of delivering the Caloundra congestion-busting project.
  • The Crisafulli Government is fast-tracking planning at the Caloundra Road and Bellvista Boulevard intersection for the next upgrade.
  • Under Labor, Caloundra's traffic network became a carpark with major delays, crashes and intersections struggling under growing congestion.
  • The Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland's future and accelerating delivery to ease pressure on Caloundra roads.

Caloundra's busiest intersections are a step closer to major upgrades, with the Crisafulli Government fast-tracking works to cut congestion and keep the Sunshine Coast moving.

Site investigations are underway at Caloundra Road and Bellvista Boulevard in Little Mountain to inform the design of a future intersection upgrade.

Momentum is also building on the Caloundra Road, Nicklin Way and Pelican Waters Boulevard upgrade, with AECOM appointed to deliver the detailed design. Further investigations will roll out in coming months as the project moves into detailed design.

Together, the projects are driving the Caloundra Congestion Busting Plan forward and demonstrating the Crisafulli Governments commitment to safer, smoother and more reliable travel across the Sunshine Coast.

It's just one of the ways the Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland's future and accelerating delivery to ease pressure on Caloundra roads.

The plan will also futureproof the Caloundra traffic network to accommodate the regions growth, by providing an alternative access route into the Caloundra CBD, upgrades to key intersections, and support enhanced public transport infrastructure.

These generational infrastructure projects are part of the Crisafulli Government's Safer Roads, Better Transport Plan to get busy roads flowing again, improving safety and supporting the growing Sunshine Coast community.

Under Labor, Caloundra's traffic network became a carpark with major delays, crashes and intersections struggling under growing congestion.

Deputy Premier and Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie said the plan was focused on easing pressure now and preparing the region for what's next.

"This is about more than congestion. It's about a transport network that supports jobs, boosts liveability and gets Queensland ready to shine on the global stage in 2032," Deputy Premier Bleijie said.

"After years of congestion building under Labor, the Crisafulli Government is focused on getting busy roads flowing again. "These upgrades will cut travel times, improve safety and support the Sunshine Coast as it grows." Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the projects would deliver practical relief for Caloundra drivers and families.

"The Caloundra Congestion Busting Plan is about real fixes that make everyday trips faster and safer, and helping locals get to school, work and home with less time stuck in traffic, after Labor failed to plan for population growth during their decade of decline," Minister Mickelberg said.

"More than 60,000 vehicles use the Caloundra Road corridor every day, and traffic is up at least 30 per cent over the past two decades.

"By pushing ahead with investigations and design now, we're setting up safer, more efficient intersections that ease congestion and back Caloundra's growth to get the community moving again.

"We're delivering multiple projects at once, locking in the design team for the Caloundra Road, Nicklin Way and Pelican Waters Boulevard intersection upgrade and fast-tracking investigations at Bellvista Boulevard in Little Mountain, so upgrades are ready to build and right for the community. Member for Caloundra Kendall Hatcher said locals were ready for congestion relief on one of the region's busiest corridors. "Everyone who drives this route knows the chokepoints, and this work shows Caloundra is finally being heard," Ms Hatcher said.

"Upgrading these intersections will make trips safer and simpler, whether you're heading to work, school, the shops or appointments."

More upgrades are in the pipeline under the Caloundra Congestion Busting Plan, including design for new north to south bridges over Caloundra Road and investigations into a future link between Aura Boulevard and Pelican Waters Boulevard.
