Camden Council has welcomed $3 million in funding from the Minns Labor Government to help transform the heart of Camden into a vibrant, connected community destination.
The Camden Civic Plaza forms part of Council's transformative John Street Public Domain Upgrade, which is revitalising Camden's historic town centre into a more accessible, attractive and people-focused destination. The project funding recognises that, as new homes are delivered, investment in the public spaces that bring communities together is equally essential.
The project will transform 27 John Street into a vibrant new public space adjoining the Camden Civic Centre and Memorial Garden. Designed as a place for the community to gather, connect and celebrate, the plaza will provide a dedicated outdoor venue for markets, events and cultural activations, while strengthening Camden's growing cultural precinct.
Once complete, the space will feature a purpose-built stage, flexible areas for events and passive recreation, market and event infrastructure, new landscaping and tree planting, lighting, public artworks, improved footpaths, seating, and wayfinding and signage to create a welcoming and accessible destination for residents and visitors.
The funding, awarded through Round 1 of the NSW Government's Faster Assessments Incentive Program, recognises Council's strong development assessment performance and commitment to delivering the infrastructure needed to support housing growth across the region.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, welcomed the funding, saying it was a significant investment in Camden's future.
"The Camden Civic Plaza will create an inviting civic space where people can gather, connect and enjoy everything our town centre has to offer, while complementing the character and heritage that makes Camden so special," she said.
"As part of the broader John Street Public Domain Upgrade, the Civic Plaza will enhance the liveability of our town centre, support local businesses and provide a welcoming destination for residents and visitors alike."
The John Street Public Domain Upgrade project as a whole will deliver improved streetscapes, enhanced pedestrian connections, new landscaping, upgraded public spaces and better accessibility throughout Camden Town Centre.
