FedDev Ontario supports United Jewish Appeal Federation of Greater Toronto as it opens Toronto Holocaust Museum

Cultural institutions and museums like the Toronto Holocaust Museum play a vital role in our society, offering places to reflect on and connect with the stories and experiences of our past, while attracting visitors from across the globe. The Government of Canada understands the importance of these historical sites to our communities and is committed to ensuring Canada's diversity of voices and experiences are heard.

Today, Ya'ara Saks, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Member of Parliament for York Centre, along with the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), announced that the United Jewish Appeal (UJA) Federation of Greater Toronto is receiving an investment of $500,000 to launch the revitalized Toronto Holocaust Museum, set to open in June 2023.

Formerly known as the Sarah And Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre, the rebranded, state-of-the-art Toronto Holocaust Museum will be located in the Charlotte and Lewis Steinberg Family Cultural Pavilion, within the Sheff Family Building on UJA's Sherman Campus. The Museum will encourage visitors to reflect on the tragedies of the Shoah and to make connections between the Holocaust, world events and contemporary Canadian life. Originally founded by Holocaust survivors in 1985 as a place dedicated to sharing their stories with students, the revitalized museum will provide an immersive educational experience for students and visitors from across the globe. It will be a place where the stories of Holocaust survivors will be shared and it will serve as an important site of memory for descendant families, affirming the history of their parents and grandparents.

Today's investment is supporting the United Jewish Appeal Federation of Greater Toronto to modernize and enhance the visitor experience to the Toronto Holocaust Museum through the development of new, interactive media and technology, including films and augmented reality tours. As a centre of excellence and innovation, the museum will generate knowledge and understanding about the Holocaust and serve as a forum for dialogue about civil society for present and future generations.
