Canadian Coast Guard Delivers Key Arctic Icebreaking

Canadian Coast Guard

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) has been providing crucial icebreaking support for commercial vessels in the eastern Arctic, since the beginning of its annual Arctic summer operations in mid-June.

As of July 14, Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Jean Goodwill, CCGS Des Groseilliers, and CCGS Vincent Massey have escorted 8 vessels, and covered over 8750 combined nautical miles in support of Arctic community resupply operations.

In the Arctic, essential supplies - construction materials, fuel, food, vehicles - are delivered by ship in the summer, when ice conditions are lighter than in winter. CCG icebreakers are to ships what snow plows are to cars. They clear a path for vessels to follow and/or maintain shipping channels through ice so vessels can navigate on their own.

CCG icebreakers deploy to the Arctic and operate annually between June and November to support Northern communities, provide coast guard services, and support Government of Canada programs in the North. For more on CCG's 2026 Arctic operations, visit Canadian Coast Guard 2026 Arctic operations.
