Canberra students board Actsmart eco bus tours

Teachers and students from 22 ACT schools have participated in Actsmart eco bus tours this week to view some of Canberra's best examples of sustainability in schools.

Students from six schools, over two tours, acted as guides to show visiting students their outstanding examples of school sustainability, Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury said today.

"Some of the great initiatives on show included worm farms, waste and recycling stations, energy and water saving measures, and activities undertaken by student green teams," Minister Rattenbury said.

"The Eco Bus tours allows students to teach and inspire students from other schools about getting the whole school involved in caring for the environment.

"One hundred and twenty students and teachers from 22 public and non-government primary schools participated in this excursion to see inspiring examples of sustainability.

"The Actsmart eco bus toured three schools on Tuesday (Mawson Primary School, Bonython Primary School and Monash Primary School) and three schools today (Kaleen Primary School, Aranda Primary School and St Joseph's Primary School).

"These schools have achieved accreditation as Actsmart Schools by demonstrating excellence in sustainability in a variety of focus areas and are understandably proud of their efforts.

"Teachers and students participating on the tour benefit from seeing sustainability projects in action and are inspired to share these ideas with their own school," Minister Rattenbury added.
