Canning Street Revamp Enters New Traffic Phase

Rockhampton Regional Council crews will begin work at the intersection of Canning Street and Cambridge Street on Tuesday, 30 June to install a new water main connection, stormwater drainage, kerbing and footpaths.

During this time, drivers on Cambridge Street won't be able to travel straight through the Canning Street intersection.

Drivers on the eastern side of Cambridge Street will be permitted to U-turn back towards Bethesda Street or turn left onto Canning Street, and drivers on the western side of Cambridge Street will only be able to U-turn back towards Quarry Street.

Local traffic needing to access the western side of Cambridge Street will need to use Quarry Street.

With recent driveway and footpath works on Albert Street now complete, the crew will continue driveway and footpath works along Canning Street towards Voss Street.

Access to the Rockhampton Hospital Emergency Department will remain via North Street.

Traffic travelling from North Street down Canning Street will not be affected.

Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor said works on the project were progressing well.

"It's really exciting to see the works reach this point, because it means we are edging even closer to this project being complete," Cr Taylor said.

"This project is important in making the area more accessible with new footpaths and ensuring our infrastructure above and below ground will last for years to come.

"As the crews get ready to begin digging at Cambridge Street, we are mindful that we could hit some challenges, such as rock, as we did at the Albert Street intersection, and our crews have measures in place if that happens."

Divisional Councillor Drew Wickerson thanked residents for their patience as the works progressed.

"Council really appreciates the community's ongoing cooperation and understanding while works have been underway and as traffic conditions change," Cr Wickerson said.

"For clarity regarding the new changes, traffic flow will remain one way from North Street down Canning Street.

"While large, complex projects like the Canning Street upgrade take significant time, reconstruction is progressing well, and we'll see these works completed before the end of the year."
