Car crashes into unit, man charged in Newcastle

A car has crashed into a unit in Newcastle this morning with the driver charged by police with mid-range drink driving, NSW Police say.

About 2.50am tomorrow, a Mitsubishi Lancer being driven west on Georgetown Road, Waratah, left the roadway, crashed through a fence and into a unit on Harriet Street.

The car stopped just short of hitting a bed where two occupants were sleeping. The man and woman were uninjured but the unit sustained significant damage.

Police arrived on the scene a short time later and breath-tested the 20-year-old driver who allegedly returned a positive result.

He was arrested and taken to Waratah Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis which returned an alleged reading of 0.180.

The man was issued a court attendance notice for the mid-range PCA to appear at Newcastle Local Court at a future date. His licence was suspended.
